PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — For the second time in as many months, the Coffee Creek Correctional Facility mail room was evacuated and a HazMat team was brought in after an unknown substance was delivered on Friday.
Five employees were working in the mail room at the time the envelope was discovered around 10:30 a.m. in Wilsonville. Two were taken to a nearby hospital to be evaluated, according to the Oregon Department of Corrections.
The Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue Hazardous Materials Team responded to the facility to examine the powder for any hazardous substances.
The last time the HazMat team was called out to the correctional facility was on September 11 when mail room staff received an envelope with a mysterious substance. During that incident, four employees had to be decontaminated and taken to the hospital after exhibiting minor symptoms. The Oregon State Police later determined that the substance was “non-biological and a non-controlled substance.”Remember to follow KOIN 6 News on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
