Bret Wilson admitted to throwing nails on roads more than 50 times

OREGON CITY, Ore. (KOIN) — An Oregon City man has admitted to intentionally throwing roofing nails onto roads in the area over the past two years, police said.

Bret Michael Wilson — dubbed the “nighttime nailer” — was caught early Tuesday morning and admitted he’d done this more than 50 times, the Oregon City police said. When he was caught they found a plastic tub full of new roofing nails about an inch long in his car.

Authorities said they actually saw him throw handfuls of nails out of his car while driving along South Center Street between 5:40 and 5:50 a.m. Police have been patrolling the area on foot and by vehicle trying to catch the nail thrower who’s been doing this off and on since 2017.

There were plenty of victims who had gotten nails stuck in their tires but there was no description of the car. Fresh batches of nails showed up the past 2 consecutive mornings, which put police on alert.

“We had figured out a time and location that was consistent and in a dark area of these streets. He was very calcuated in what he was doing,” said Oregon City Police Captain Shaun Davis. “When a car comes down and windows are down and all of a sudden he throw nails out, we want to catch him. The officer was a little shocked he was actually watching this happen.”

Despite the incidents of nails damaging car tires there were no injuries reported.

The 56-year-old faces 4 counts of disorderly conduct and investigators are working on submitting previous cases to the Clackamas County DA’s office. He’s due in court later this month.
