Battle Ground weighs annexing Fire District

Clark County

There is a public meeting Monday at 7 p.m.

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The Battle Ground City Council is discussing the possibility of annexing Fire District 3 to Clark County.

Currently, Battle Ground contracts for fire and emergency medical services with Fire District 3. Officials say costs for those services have increased to the point where they now have to take money away from other city services like police, roads and community programs.

If voters approve of the annexation, it would raise property taxes, while lowering utility taxes, to ensure city services.

If the annexation fails, Battle Ground would have to come up with several areas where they would make cuts to deal with the deficit in their budget.

There are two opportunities for the community to give input. The first meeting is Monday at 7 p.m. at the Battle Ground council chambers. The next is October 21.

If the City Council and Fire Commissioners approve of the annexation, the final decision will go to voters in February’s special election.
