PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A man is dead after an officer-involved shooting Tuesday night outside a Vancouver Safeway, according to the Vancouver Police Department.
Police say the man ran through the parking lot at Mill Plain Boulevard and Andresen Road and shot at officers when three detectives and one Clark County Sheriff’s deputy opened fire.
Despite life-saving efforts, officers say the man – who has yet to be named – died at the scene.
According to Vancouver police, detectives recognized the man as a suspect in multiple recent armed robberies while he had been driving westbound near 6700 E. Mill Plain Blvd. After the man entered and exited the store, police say he “dropped a bag of items, displayed a firearm, [and] ran westbound through the parking lot.”
The detectives say the man fired toward police as they tried to apprehend him, so the three officers and one deputy returned fire.
The three Vancouver police officers and Clark County deputy have been placed on leave, according to officials.
The Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office is the lead agency investigating the shooting.
