PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A California father drowned after he rushed into the Santiam River to rescue his daughter in distress Thursday afternoon.

Emergency crews rushed to North Fork Park along the Little North Fork of the Santiam River just after 2 p.m., the Marion County Sheriff’s Office said. Bystanders were able to pull the man, Baltazar Tellovelasco, out of the water before first responders arrived.

Despite their best efforts, the 29-year-old from Oxnard, California died at the scene.

His 12-year-old daughter was able to make it out of the water safely, authorities said.

Authorities said the water remains cold, swift and deeper than swimmers anticipate. There is also very little to no cell phone reception in the North Fork area of the Santiam River, the sheriff’s office said.
