PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — An early morning fire on Sunday in Keizer killed a 62-year-old man and seriously injured his wife.
Keizer Fire District said the mobile home with an attached porch caught fire at the Rainbow Gardens Mobile Village around 5:45 a.m.
Unfortunately, Mate Mezei died as a result of the fire as well as his dog.
His wife — 59-year-old Maria Mezei — made it out thanks to the help of her neighbors, Dan and Linda Garcher. They woke up after hearing a dog barking.
Dan ran into the burning home trying to save Mate while Linda rolled Maria in the grass to stop her from burning.
Maria suffered serious injuries from the blaze and remains hospitalized. Dan also sustained injuries while trying to rescue both Maria and her husband.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Officials said there were no working smoke detectors in the home.
