Gas line was hit during digging near Wheatley School

A broken gas line forced homes in the NE 140th/Sacramento area to be evacuated, October 24, 2019 (KOIN)

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A broken gas line in Northeast Portland led to the evacuation of homes in the area and put a nearby school on alert, Portland Fire & Rescue tweeted.

The gas line was hit and broken while digging was taking place near NE 140th Avenue and NE Sacramento Street, KOIN 6 News learned. Wheatley School was not evacuated but was placed on a soft lockdown.

Crews from NW Natural arrived and pinched the line. The PF&R battalion chief said the scene would likely be cleared by noon.

Power to the block and the school was expected to be shut off while officials fixed the gas line.
