PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Cameron’s Books and Magazines has just a month left on the business’ lease before they will be forced to vacate the downtown Portland location.
A crowdfunding campaign has raised just under half of the total needed to preserve the city’s oldest book store. Friends and fans of Cameron’s Books held what they called a funeral before the book store is set to close. The shop has been open since 1938.
“I want everyone to come out so that we have a place for the public to say what it is that our bookstore means to them,” said Crystal Zingshein, a rare book specialist. “Because a lot of people, they can’t imagine their lives without us being here. We’ve been here so long. I don’t think there’s anyone alive that can remember Portland without us.”
The lease expires December 1. Information and updates on the crowdfunding’s efforts can be found here. The campaign will be active until Wednesday, November 6, at midnight.
