PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The Portland City Council voted Thursday to change the name of SW Stark Street in honor of LGBTQ civil rights leader Harvey Milk.

The name change will affect the 13-block stretch of SW Stark through downtown Portland.

A committee decided to rename the street after Milk because of the surrounding neighborhood’s historic connection to the LGBTQ community.

Milk and San Francisco Mayor Ed Moscone were assassinated in 1978, an event that galvanized the gay community and led to a broader push for civil rights.

The Harvey Milk PDX campaign said this change will commemorate and celebrate the LGBTQ community in Portland.

A statement on the group’s website explains:

“We believe visible, public acknowledgement of the struggles and contributions of the LGBTQ community is a crucial part of this vision. Public art, memorials, & building/street names all send a lasting, powerful message to those who experience them.”
