Controversial fliers in Lents target undocumented immigrants

Multnomah County

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Fliers created by an outspoken white supremacist group recently popped up in the Lents neighborhood — upsetting neighbors.

The fliers were found Saturday and included the web address for a nationalist website called “Daily Stormer.” The site is outspokenly racist and anti-Semitic.

The fliers were specifically targeting undocumented immigrants. They say it’s the “civic duty” of U.S. citizens to report “illegal aliens.”

One man told KOIN 6 News he found eight of the fliers on Southeast 92nd, just between Powell and Holgate.

As of Monday, it doesn’t appear the fliers are still posted, however, neighbors are upset and say the message doesn’t represent the area.

When asked about her reaction, Charlena Russo said, “Shocked because this is a very mixed-race area. I’m pretty shocked that’s even going on.”

Russo said the message hits far too close to home.

“My husband, he’s Hispanic too and that’s just crazy that those are even up,” she said.

A few days before the fliers were put up in Portland, the same ones showed up in different parts of the country. In Nebraska, a Hispanic man had one taped to his front door. Earlier this summer, another person in Lents spotted a different flier from the same website — blaming Jewish people for the slave trade.

Looking at Daily Stormer’s site, it appears that simply upsetting people is the goal of the fliers.

While they’ve have been taken down, the fact that they were even posted at all has people, like Russo’s husband, feeling threatened.

“He’s scared,” Russo said. “I mean, what can we do about it?”
