PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Divers on Saturday resumed looking for a swimmer reported missing around 6 p.m. Friday near Sauvie Island.

Crews searched for hours on Friday without finding the swimmer.

The swimmer is from outside the region, the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office told KOIN 6 News, and was at the spot with friends and family. When he became distressed in the water, people tried but were unable to reach him.

They called 911 and the search continued for about 3 hours Friday night. Divers returned to the area around 10 a.m. Saturday.

Emergency responders from the Scappoose and Portland fire departments plus deputies from Clark, Columbia and Multnomah counties helped in the search.

Authorities said the water isn’t as deep currently as it normally is, meaning the drop offs are closer to shore than normal.

Authorities have not yet released the swimmer’s name.

Later Friday, a man drowned not far from this location near Kelley Point Park in the Columbia River. That man’s name has also not yet been released.

KOIN 6 News will have more information later in the day.
