PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Ground was broken Thursday morning on a big expansion at the Leach Botanical Garden in Southeast Portland.

At the ceremony, City Commissioner Nick Fish said Leach Botanical Garden is a hidden gem.

“When this Phase One is finished, it will no longer be hidden,” he said. “Someday I think when the work is finished we’ll talk about the Leach Botanical Garden in the same way we talk about the Lan Su Chinese Garden and the Japanese Gardens in our city that we celebrate.”

The money for this expansion and improvement came from city and regional government funding along with private donations totaling $1.26 million.

The Leach Botanical Garden is located at 6704 SE 122nd in Portland.
