Naked man threatens rape, attacks woman at MAX stop

Multnomah County

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A naked man is accused of threatening and attacking a Portland woman at a MAX stop.

It happened Feb. 6 at the NE Holladay & 7th Avenue station.

The victim — Ellen Greer — said the man was standing naked in the middle of the MAX tracks around 4:00 p.m. when he started yelling at TriMet officers.

Greer said the man threw a shoe at the officers, shouted racial expletives and the word “slave.” Greer said the man then turned his attention to her as she was recording the outburst on her phone.

“He just locked his gaze with me and started coming toward me,” said Greer.

The man called her derogatory names and told her he was going to rape her before he ran toward her, grabbed her by the hair and forced her to the ground. Greer said she tried to grab her pepper spray as he rushed her but wasn’t fast enough. She said that once she was on the ground, the man leaned his body weight onto her knee. Greer struggled and screamed for help as she felt her leg break.

Bystanders helped to pull him off of Greer but not before he managed to inflict both physical and emotional trauma.

Greer, whose arm was also injured, said she will eventually need surgery on her leg. She said she has also been seeing a counselor.

The experience has made her realize there are dangers in taking public transit.

“I just want people to understand you are not necessarily safe just because there are security guards around when you are riding TriMet and always take self-defense classes,” said Greer. “Especially for the women, trying to navigate the city by yourself on the MAX, do whatever it takes.”

Authorities arrested Theodore Metzger on several charges, including assault. Greer said she recently testified at a hearing to have Metzger committed to a psychiatric facility.
