Portland streetcar derails, interrupts MAX services

The streetcar derailed around 11:30 a.m.

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A streetcar derailed in downtown Portland on Tuesday morning, disrupting all trains and various MAX services.

The streetcar derails near Southwest 5th and Montgomery around 11:30 a.m. According to Andrew Plambeck of Portland Streetcar, a switch threw underneath the streetcar, setting its back wheels off the rails.

Portland Streetcar will be working with ODOT’s State Safety Oversight office to make sure the faulty switch is safe before being put back in operation.

The MAX Orange and Yellow lines were affected by the derailment. Bus lines 9, 17, 19 and 44 are also interrupted and will not have a stop at Southwest 5th and Harrison.

As of this writing, crews are still working to get the streetcar back on the tracks. No injuries were reported.
