PSU’s Viking Pavilion ‘a big deal for us’

Multnomah County

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The central feature of the new $52.1 million, 142,000-square foot building on the Portland State University campus is a multi-purpose venue that can seat 3400 people as the new home of the men’s basketball team.

“We’ve never had anything like this before,” basketball coach Barret Peery told KOIN 6 News. “We’ve had a lot of great things to sell here in Portland but to have this facility is going to be a big deal for us.”

Beyond the hoops, the building includes on-site catering, food trucks and a cafe. The venue is built for conferences, banquets, receptions, lectures, sporting events, commencements, concerts, trade shows and more and was built with sustainable material that is low-emitting and non-toxic.

All athletic offices will be consolidated in the building, which is also able to accommodate mid-sized events and conferences.

“It fits a niche in our city that hasn’t been filled before,” PSU Assistant Vice President Alex Accetta said. “We’re hopeful we can draw the people here that haven’t been able to fill this space before.”

The new weight room has been expanded. It’s an important addition to the South Park blocks and it gives a growing number of students living near campus a new focal point to learn, play and gravitate toward.

The official grand opening celebration is April 9 at 12 p.m
