PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — As many as 7 people all living in the same Southeast Portland apartment complex complained of breathing problems Thursday afternoon.

Portland Fire and Rescue said the call was upgraded to a Hazmat response at about 12:45 p.m. after multiple people called to report respiratory irritation.

First responders found between 6 and 7 people were affected at the complex. Some said they thought mace or pepper spray was to blame, though firefighters didn’t find any traces of it in the air.

Officials said the odor dissipated naturally and those who were affected said their symptoms cleared up.

The residents who were evacuated from their apartments were eventually allowed to return.

Officials did not disclose the name of the apartment complex.
