CANNON BEACH, Ore. (KOIN) — A boat that was at sea during the 2011 tsunami off the coast of Japan has washed ashore on the Oregon Coast.
The 45-foot boat was found just a few miles south of Cannon Beach over the weekend.
The boat is pretty banged up from its journey and covered in non-native barnacles, but you can still see Japanese writing on it.
“Something like this makes you realize that what happens any place in the world touches you no matter who you are and where you live and what’s going on and I think we need to remember that,” said Bonnie Neugebauer, who lives nearby.
Experts say the boat could have washed up on a beach in Alaska or British Columbia and then swept back into the ocean, or it could have been adrift for years.
Oregon State Parks officials will be working on a plan to remove the boat from the beach.
