PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Five people were rescued from a sailboat Wednesday off the coast of Newport.
The Coast Guard received a distress call just after 5 a.m. from the 50-foot sailboat located 20 miles west of Yaquina Bay.
Those aboard the vessel said they were struggling to get to safe harbor and weren’t sure they could cross the bar at the entrance of Yaquina Bay. Offshore waves were reaching up to 20 feet with winds up to 40 knots.
A crew aboard a Coast Guard lifeboat reached the sailboat at 7:30 a.m. and towed it to about 2 miles offshore of the bay. Officials then had the five people on the sailboat put on lifejackets and get into the water. They were quickly picked up by a crew on a lifeboat.
All five people were taken to shore unharmed. Their sailboat was safely moored in Newport Wednesday evening.
