PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Scores of people across the United States agree with what Oregonians already knew — Florence is a special place.
A contest held by USHarbors.com found the town along the central Oregon Coast is home to one of the best harbors in the entire country.
The results of the contest — released Monday — rank Florence as the second-best harbor in the U.S. behind Padanaram, South Dartmouth, Massachusetts.
The Best Harbor contest started in January. Nominations rolled in for early 1,300 harbors in 23 different states. USHarbors tallied votes from among its 4 million users.
Florence won the most votes of any harbor along the West Coast.
Bettina Hannigan with the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce said, “We knew our harbor was worth voting for because of its astounding natural beauty; the excellent boating, fishing, and crabbing; and our vibrant riverside Historic Old Town district’s excellent food, drink, galleries, shops, and award-winning hotels. There is also our historic bridge, public art, farmer’s markets, concerts, parks, the Siuslaw River Interpretive Center, and fun wildlife viewing of birds, sea lions, otters, and occasional orcas.”
