PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The Portland Timbers announced today that the franchise and midfielder Lucas Melano have mutually agreed to terminate the Argentinian’s contract. Melano will be placed on MLS waivers, and will be free to sign with any team.
“We would like to thank Lucas for his service to the club – including his contributions in helping the Timbers win their first MLS Cup – and we wish him the best in his future endeavors,” said Gavin Wilkinson, general manager and president of soccer for the Timbers.
Melano, 26, played in parts of four seasons with the Timbers, originally signed on July 17, 2015. He tallied five goals and nine assists in 59 appearances with the club, including 10 playoff matches. But, Melano fell out of favor for a stretch and spent time on loan from January 2017 to June 2018 before returning and sticking on Gio Savarese’s squad.
“It was a pleasure getting to know Lucas and we are thankful for his contributions to the Timbers,” said Savarese, head coach of the Timbers. “I wish him well as he moves on from the club.”
