Bait packages equipped with tracking devices

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Deputies in Washington County hope porch pirates take the bait.

In the wake of Amazon’s Prime Day, law enforcement launched the bait package mission in an effort to catch — and possibly dissuade — thieves from stealing delivered packages from front porches.

Washington County deputies partnered with the US Postal Inspection Service and detectives with the property crimes unit for this bait package plan. These decoy packages have tracking devices that allow deputies to track them after they’ve been stolen. The data will be collected to determine which areas have the biggest problems with porch pirates.
