PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Two Hillsboro police officers are testing a new way to tackle messes at homeless camps and help the people living there.

Officers Jason Becker and Mike Abshier, who are on the Crisis Intervention Team, asked homeless people to clean up in return for a restaurant gift card.

They organized a clean up at Dairy Creek Park and got 6 campers working to collect trash.

Becker said the project is a great way to connect with the people they’re trying to help with the Crisis Negotiation Team.

“It’s also an opportunity for us to educate people in these encampments about the time and work that it takes for City employees to clean up trash that’s left behind,” he said.

“Hopefully, the people who helped us clean this homeless encampment will remember this experience and help keep the area clean in the future,” Abshier said.
