1 dies when 15-passenger van hits trees, catches fire

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — One person died and another seriously hurt when a 15-passenger van went off Highway 18, hit some trees and burst into flames in the early hours of Tuesday.

The crash north of Lincoln City happened around 3 a.m., the Oregon State Police said. The GMC van caught fire after hitting the trees.

The driver of the van, 22-year-old Shaypher Lee M. Hendricks of Ellensburg, Washington was flown to Legacy Emmanuel for treatment of serious injuries.

The passenger, 27-year-old Austin M. Mayhak of Union Gap, Washington, died.

Alcohol may have been a factor in the crash, authorities said.
