PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Two stray dogs, who were both underweight and needed medical attention when they arrived at a local hospital, are now enjoying a happier and healthier life together.

According to DoveLewis, neither 8-year-old Phillip nor 6-year-old Dade were in great condition when they arrived at their hospital. Phillip, a white poodle mix, had several inches of severely matted fur, a dislocated knee joint and suffered from dental disease. Dade, a chocolate Great Dane mix, was even more underweight than Philip. His ribs, hip bones and shoulder blades were clearly visible.

Phillip underwent his examination and treatment first — which included staff spending more than an hour shaving his entangled fur. When Dade entered the room, he eagerly searched the room for Phillip and even propped himself up on the table when he found his friend.

The friends greeted each other with a nose kiss and continued to stay close during the time at DoveLewis.

Technician assistant Lorri Schinderle said, “I get teary just thinking about Dade’s worried expression when he walked in the room looking for Phillip. They were so attached. You can tell that they were meant to be together. Dade didn’t leave Phillip’s side, and he wouldn’t stop kissing him and loving him.”

According to Dr. Becca Falender, the 2 dogs were so worried about each other as doctors continued treating the pair.

“They were just so worried about each other — even when we separated them across the room,” Falender said.

After running multiple tests and treating the dogs, they were transferred to Multnomah County Animal Services — who continued their treatments for a few more weeks until they were healthy enough for adoption.

While it’s uncommon for dogs of such different sizes to be adopted together, Phillip and Dade found a forever home that understand their strong connection.

“We were so hopeful that they would find a home together. It feels good to know that we treated them, shaved years of mats off Phillip and gave them hope,” Schinderle said. “It makes me so happy to know that someone is going to love them and they will have a new life together.”
