card skimmer scam

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Three juveniles have been arrested for allegedly putting a skimming device on an ATM at a Salem bank.

Skimming devices look like card readers but are used to scan information from bank and credit cards and allow thieves to use that information for other fraud crimes.

According to Salem police, a victim found what he thought was a skimming device at Maps Credit Union on SE Commercial Street. He said the card slot looked unusual and he had heard of skimming devices so he pulled the suspicious part off and called police.

Detectives were able to track down three suspects who allegedly put the device on the ATM. Detectives said they found other skimming devices in the suspects’ car. Police are trying to determine whether these suspects were also involved with a skimming incident at the same credit union in September 2017.

The suspects are all California residents and have been lodged in the Marion County Juvenile Detention Facility.

Investigators are warning people to be aware skimmers and take a close look at ATMs and card readers before scanning.

“Take a close look at the machine that you are thinking of using. Does anything look amiss? The color of the skimmers is sometimes different than other trim on the machine. Do the various parts of the machine match the other parts? Is there anything loose on the machine, particularly the area where the card is inserted? Sometimes skimming devices appear to stick out further than other parts of the machine. If there are other machines around, compare the machines to make sure they all look the same. Are any parts missing or different? If any irregularities are noticed, DO NOT use the machine. Leave and immediately contact the business management. “
