6 activists cited after blocking ICE deportation bus

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Activists blocked a bus trying to leave the Immigration and Customs Enforcement office in Portland.

According to the End Deportations Now Collaboration group, 5 organizers started a physical barricade to block the bus, which was reportedly carrying undocumented immigrants to the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma.

“Deportations and this failed immigration system do not only affect undocumented people,” protester Kari Koch said. “They affect all of us. Me, my family, my neighbors, my community members.”

Six demonstrators were detained by Federal Protective Service for failure to comply to verbal warnings and blocking the federal facility. According to the Department of Homeland Security, they were all cited and released.

“We’re here to send a clear message that Portland has no space, no room, no tolerance for deportations,” protester Amina Rahman said. “Deportations tear our communities apart and we’re not going to stand by idly while our communities and families are ripped apart violently by the government.”

Portland police said demonstrators used what is known as a “Sleeping Dragon,” a device made of pipe, plastic, chicken wire, duct tape and chains.

“People using ‘Sleeping Dragons,’ place their hands inside the pipe and lock their arms together by handcuffs, zip tie or another method. The pipe is often wrapped in materials that make it extremely difficult to cut,” Sgt. Chris Burley said in a email.

Portland police said the protesters refused to move or take their arms out of the Sleeping Dragon, so officers had to use tools that cause sparks to cut the Sleeping Dragon, so protesters were put in fire retardant hoods and ear muffs to protect them. There were no injuries.
