PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The Fourth of July holiday is one of the busiest times of the year for animal shelters.
Fireworks can frighten pets into running away from home.
Be sure to keep them inside if they don’t like the noise and also make sure their ID tags are on in case they do get out.
Pets that are bothered by the sounds should be kept inside of rooms with closed windows and secure doors (a screen door won’t stop a frightened dog from bolting).
“Even if you think your pet will be ok, don’t take a chance,” says Tanya Roberts, Oregon Humane Society training and behavior manager. “A panicked pet can quickly escape a fenced yard or get loose.”
