Arson in Astoria leaves neighbors shaken up

ASTORIA, Ore. (KOIN) — An Astoria couple is shaken up after police said someone intentionally tried to set their house on fire — which is just a few doors away from the famous home featured in the movie “The Goonies.”

According to Astoria Police, the couple heard something unusual late Saturday night and went outside to see what was going on. They then realized that parts of their front porch, a chair and the side of their house –where the gas meter currently is — were all on fire.

Police said the couple found a piece of clothing that was used like a wick on the porch railing. They also found some other material by the gas meter. Fortunately, the couple was able to extinguish the fires.

“Had they not been awoken by this light on the front porch the whole house could’ve gone up in fire,” Chief of Police Geoff Spalding said. “It could’ve been very serious, it could’ve obviously resulted in their demise.”

Spalding also said that whoever set the fire was “intent on doing damage.”

While no one was hurt because of the fire, neighbors are still shaken up over the incident.

Neighbor Peggy Sooter lives right across the street from the house that an arsonist targeted and said it’s unnerving that someone set the home on fire on purpose.

“It is scary because it’s so close. All of our houses are old for somebody to do that,” Sooter said.

Police said the couple doesn’t know who could have done this and no other homes were targeted, so they’re looking for leads.
