PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Biketown is set to offer a cash option in Portland with a new program called Biketown for All, the company announced on Thursday.

The program is designed to allow Portland residents living on low incomes to become Biketown members and pay with cash. It will also provide free helmets to Biketown for All members, as well as safety education, the company said.

Portlanders living on low incomes and who are affiliated with social service and participating housing and community organizations can sign up and receive a discounted membership for $3 per month.

The new program is a partnership between the Community Cycling Center (CCC), the Portland Bureau of Transportation, Motivate, the Better Bike Share Partnership and other participating affordable housing communities, social service agencies and local nonprofits.

The Giving Tree NW’s Heather Morrill released the following statement:

Having a cash membership option is a game changer in making bike share accessible for low-income Portlanders. I know I will see many of my clients riding Biketown who otherwise would not have access to this transportation and recreation option.

For starters, Biketown for All memberships will only be available through participating affordable housing, social service and nonprofit organizations. Nonprofit organizations interested in participating in the Biketown for All program can click here for more information.
