PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Congressman Earl Blumenauer held a rally Sunday for a new resolution to declare the climate crisis a national emergency.
Blumenauer introduced the resolution along with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders. It was co-sponsored by 50 members of the House and 10 senators.
It demands urgent national action to “halt, reverse, mitigate, and prepare for the consequences of the climate emergency and to restore the climate for future generations.”
At the event, Blumenauer said President Donald Trump’s remarks calling the climate crisis a “hoax” are not based on scientific fact. He added that the time to act on the crisis is now.
More than a dozen environmental groups joined the rally Sunday at the Sierra Club in SE Portland.
