'Lloyd Local' showcases big part of mall's future

Lloyd Center wants to feature more unique shops, entertainment

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- There are plenty of Portlanders who've started their own business -- and the Lloyd Center Shopping Mall is ramping up a new retail initiative to showcase just that.

Lloyd Local features well over 20 retail spaces occupied by local products made by local people -- including skincare products, placemats and tablewear.

"So there are microbusinesses," head of leasing at Lloyd Center Cori Jacobs said. "Everybody here is from Portland, Oregon. Some of them sell internationally, some of them have existing stores."

The seasonal initiative, which kicked off Thursday morning, is like a Saturday Market -- but it's inside and way bigger. The group of pop-up shops now occupy 35,000 square feet of the mall's retail space.

This focus on small specialized merchants selling locally-made items is also Lloyd Center's link to the future as it transforms itself from a traditional shopping mall to more of a place where you can eat, see concerts and go to movies.

"We're making that shift to unique retail and entertainment and you'll see that over the next couple years," Jacobs said. "So everything here is really holiday and it is really focused on retail, but as we go into next quarter, we're going to dabble more into entertainment too."

Lloyd Local stores are mixed in with the traditional retailers people are used to seeing at the mall. But, the new emphasis on small, unique retail and entertainment is a big part of the mall's upcoming plans.

The Lloyd Center is the oldest mall in Oregon and it's set on renovating and reimagining its way into the future.
