PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A fire was reported at a NW Portland recycling center Thursday afternoon, and fire officials said they are concerned about possibly hazardous chemicals inside.

Portland Fire Dept. was called to Metro Central Transfer station on the 6100 block of NW 61st Avenue around 2:40 p.m.

The fire reportedly started inside a trailer that contains trash, and was active with smoke when firefighters arrived on the scene, a Portland Fire Dept. spokesperson told KOIN 6 News.

Crews are currently battling the flames with water, but they are concerned about possibly contaminated runoff because of the facility’s proximity to the Willamette River.

KOIN 6 News is on the scene and will have more information shortly.
