PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter landed on a reef on Tuesday afternoon to rescue a teenager suffering an unknown medical issue stuck in Big Whale cove just south of Depoe Bay, the Depoe Bay Fire District said.

Depoe Bay Firefighters said they reached the 19-year-old man in the cove about 10 minutes after responding. A helicopter from Newport was requested and responded to the area.

Firefighters said the helicopter was able to land on a reef because of the low tide. Normally, the reef would be under water, firefighters said. They thanked “Mother Nature” for the assist.

The teen was transported to a local hospital. There are no details on his condition.
