City shuts off Benson Bubblers during cold spell

News

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Say bye bye to the Benson Bubblers — just for a while.

The Portland Water Bureau began shutting of the city’s iconic drinking fountains on Tuesday as cold temperatures swept through the region, the city announced.

Frozen bubblers can make sidewalks dangerous for pedestrians.

But a few of them will stay on for people who use them as their primary source of water. Those include one at 5th Avenue and W Burnside Street, one on the waterfront near the west end of the Steel Bridge and another under the Burnside Bridge.

The city will turn all of the bubblers back on once the cold spell is over.

Jaymee Cuti with the Portland Water Bureau says the city experiences about 200 water main breaks a year, and underground pipes are a concern in the cold weather.

“The predicted weather is ushering in main break season for us,” Cuti said. “So what that means is the ground is going to freeze and then it’s going to thaw, and that movement will put pressure on our aging pipes. The cold water in the pipes can also make them brittle.”

Many people are rushing to cover their pipes and faucets before temperatures get even cooler. You can find covers for them at your local hardware store.
