E-scooters coming back to Portland in Spring 2019

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Citing a survey showing 62% of Portlanders have a positive view of e-scooters, the Portland Bureau of Transportation announced Tuesday they will have another pilot program to gauge their impact beginning in Spring 2019.

This pilot program will last one year. The first pilot program lasted 4 months.

“There were some issues there we need to address so we will do a pilot for longer and see — how do these things work in winter? for example,” John Brady with PBOT said. 

E-scooters were as risky as other forms of transportation, data from the Multnomah County Health Department found, PBOT said. During that 4-month period, only about 5% of all the traffic crash injury visits to emergency rooms were related to scooters. And, the data showed, scooters generated less than half the visits to ERs as bicycles (176 visits vs 429 visits) in the same period.


In a statement, City Commissioner Chloe Eudaly — who oversees the transportation in the city — said she was glad PBOT took a proactive approach in the pilot program.

“While this technology has the potential to reduce congestion and pollution, I remain concerned about the unlawful use of e-scooters on sidewalks and in City parks, and the impact of e-scooters on people with mobility challenges or vision impairment,” Eudaly said. “We will continue to seek public input on how to best serve all Portlanders.”

The exact date for the beginning of the 2019 pilot project has not yet been set and PBOT said they want people to share their thoughts through an online open house. That online effort will begin soon, officials said.

In a statement from Lime on Tuesday, the company said they “deeply” value their “partnership with PBOT and the people of Portland” and that they “intend to re-launch operations in Portland as soon as we are allowed to do so.”
