PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Dennis Richardson, the Oregon Secretary of State who died earlier this week, will be laid to rest following a state funeral in the State Capitol in Salem.

Richardson succumbed to his battle with brain cancer on February 27. He was 69.

On Wednesday, March 6, Richardson’s body will lie in state beginning at 9 a.m. in the Capitol Rotunda. The public will be able to pay their final respects at this time.

The funeral service will begin at 2 p.m. in the House of Representatives chamber. Overflow seating will be available in the Senate chamber and committee rooms.

After the news of his passing, Gov. Kate Brown ordered all flags at Oregon public institutions to be flown at half-staff in honor of Richardson. Flags will also be flown at half-staff on the day of his interment from sunrise to sundown.

In June 2018, Richardson announced that he had been diagnosed with brain cancer. During a Facebook Live, Richardson said the tumor had been found at an early stage and he planned to continue working and fulfilling his responsibilities.

Earlier in February, Richardson said he was scaling back in-office hours to rest and give his treatment for brain cancer every opportunity to succeed. Prior to that, he made a rare public appearance in the state capitol on Jan. 7 for the swearing in of the labor commissioner.

He served 6 terms in the State Legislature from 2003-2015 and was the GOP nominee for governor against John Kitzhaber in 2014. He was elected secretary of state in 2016 — the first Republican to hold statewide office in 30 years.

Dennis Richardson, who was born in 1949, leaves behind 9 children and his wife Cathy.
