Wheeler: PPB may test body cameras this year

Civic Affairs

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The Portland Police Bureau may start testing body cameras later this year.

At this monthly press conference Monday afternoon, Mayor Ted Wheeler said the city will soon put out a request for proposals from several companies to present information about their systems.

The city would then run review demonstrations and select two companies for a trail.

Meanwhile, the police and city leaders have been holding public forums to talk about camera policies. Wheeler said he expects to decide by June of 2020 whether to fully implement body cameras for officers.

The Hillsboro and Beaverton Police Departments already use them.
