1 dead, 1 seriously injured in Hwy 22 head-on crash


Ella Higley, 86, suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Mark Higley was driving west on Highway 22 near Stayton Saturday evening when he attempted to turn onto Fern Ridge Road — but instead crashed head-on into an oncoming Suburban.

The passenger in Mark’s Mercury Marquis, Ella Higley, suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. She was 86-years-old.

Mark, 88, walked away from the scene unharmed.

Robert Dethman, a passenger in the Suburban, was seriously injured but the driver, Windy Dethman, was not. One other adult and 4 kids were also in the car at the time, but all got away without any injuries.

Highway 22E was closed for 4 hours as a result of the crash.
