Body found after Eugene rollover crash was ex-Duck

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - Eugene police say a body was found in heavy brush hours after a rollover crash in which the suspected drunken driver said he was not carrying any passengers.

Police later identified the victim as 21-year-old Fotu Tuli Leiato. He was a defensive back for the Oregon Ducks until earlier this year, when he was dismissed after two arrests.

Police spokeswoman Melinda McLaughlin says the Kia sedan driven by a 22-year-old man rolled off the road at 2:30 a.m. Friday. The man told officers he had been driving alone.

After sunrise, a woman walking near the area noticed a hand poking out of the brush. Police responded and found the body.

McLaughlin said investigators determined the deceased person had been a passenger in the vehicle.

McLaughlin says the suspect, 22-year-old Pedro Chavarin Jr. has so far only been cited for drunken driving.

In a statement, UO Athletic Director Rob Mullens and Head Coach Mario Cristobal said:

“We are saddened to learn of the passing of Fotu, and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time. He will be remembered and missed by all who knew him.”
