PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A driver was arrested late Saturday night after fleeing a crash scene where his passenger died.
Portland Police said an officer tried to perform a traffic stop near SE 124th Avenue and Division Street around 11 p.m. The car did not stop but the officer did not pursue.
The car then crashed into a pole in the intersection of SE 122nd Avenue and Division Street. The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office said half of the vehicle was impaled by the pole.
Officers arrived and found the passenger, 19-year-old Heaven Leigh Mathews, dead.
The driver, 26-year-old Adam Alexander Valle, fled the scene on foot but was found within a block and arrested.
According to the DA’s office, when paramedics told Valle he’d been in a crash and his passenger died, he started laughing.
Valle is charged 2nd-degree manslaughter, felony hit-and-run, DUII and reckless driving. He entered a not guilty plea in court on Monday.
According to court documents, Valle said he’d been awake for four or five days and had been using methamphetamine.
The car was a Subaru Legacy that had been reported stolen.
Valle was arrested December 27 in Gladstone after being caught on surveillance camera trying to steal a bike from literally the front of the Gladstone Police Department.
