Fatal crash happened after car stopped for ducks

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- One person died in a 3-car crash that started when the lead driver stopped to let ducks cross the highway on Thursday.

Washington State Patrol Trooper Will Finn said the first car stopped on the I-205 ramp from WB Mill Plain Road because there were ducks in the road. The second car, a white Nissan, slowed down behind the first car, but a Dodge pickup truck crashed into the Nissan.

Finn said the Nissan driver died at the scene either as a result of injuries sustained in the crash or a medical event after the collision. Officials later identified the driver as 51-year-old Michael Felton of Ridgefield.

The driver of the first car was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and the Dodge driver was not hurt.

The crash is still under investigation but Finn said the inattention by the Dodge driver was a contributing factor.

No ducks were injured.

One lane of SB I-205 was blocked and traffic slowed after the crash around 12:30.
