PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- A man died when he drove off Hwy 20 and into the Willamette River Monday morning.
The Benton County Sheriff's Office said 77-year-old Kenneth Leys, of Albany, may have had a medical event that caused him to crash. He was heading west on Hwy 20 when he went off the road, hit a tree and then went into the river.
A witness called 911 and authorities quickly respnded. The Chevy Cruze was submerged but visible and divers managed to connect a tow cable.
Unfortunatly Leys was dead when they pulled him out.
This is the second time a person has died driving into the Willamette River. A Brownsville woman also went into the river on an icy morning earlier this month. Her body was recovered a week later.
