GRESHAM, Ore. (KOIN) — A 19-year-old motorcyclist died and the driver of an SUV was injured in a crash shortly after Wednesday afternoon in Gresham.

The crash at Burnside Road and Oregon Trail Center closed Burnside for nearly 4 hours as authorities carried out an investigation.

The 81-year-old driver of the Hyundai SUV involved in the crash was cooperating, authorities said. No arrests or citations have been issued.

Gresham police officers said the SUV driver was turning into a shopping center off of Burnside just east of Hogan and then crashed with the motorcycle, which was heading westbound on Burnside.

The motorcyclist was later identified as Henry Sweeney of Gresham.

Sgt. Thomas Walker said motorcyclists must always take extra precautions.

“I’ve been an avid motorcycle rider since I was 5 years old and the only thing I can say — and I’m not assigning guilt or fault to anyone at this point — but you have to give yourself every advantage you can,” Walker said. “So high visibility gear, good helmets, something retroflective piping.”
