2018 in review: Homicides in Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Portland saw 29 homicides in 2018 — two more than 2017.

Twelve of the 29 homicides remain unsolved. There were also four fatal police shootings in Portland in 2018.

Robert Porter, 53, of Newberg was the first person killed in 2018. Portland police said he attempted to rob the Southeast Powell Boulevard U-Haul store on Jan. 3, 2018. when he was shot by an employee. Authorities later determined the employee was justified in the shooting.

Jonathan Lehman, 35, was shot on Dec. 28, 2017, and later died on Jan. 4, 2018 of his injuries at a local hospital. Alphonzo L. Johnson was arrested in January 2018 on multiple charges, including manslaughter and assault.

Cody Oller, 25, was found dead on Jan. 8, 2018, after people heard shots fired at Fernhill Park. Oller was a Kansas native who moved out to Portland a few years prior to live with his sister. Despite an extensive search and his dad offering a $30,000 reward, no suspects have been identified in this shooting.

Ellante Williams, 30, died on Jan. 21, 2018, after he was shot in downtown Portland. Police found Williams in a parked car and rushed him to the hospital, however, he died of his injuries. Two suspects were arrested after his death: Avarihae Collins and Aaron Brit.

Kentraveon Hill, 18, was killed on Jan. 23, 2018, in the Hazelwood neighborhood in a shooting that also wounded another teen. Guthrie Damron was arrested and identified as a suspect in the fatal shooting.

Davonte Kearney, 22, was shot and killed in Northwest Portland on Jan. 31, 2018. Court documents later revealed that Kearney was a well-known Hoover gang member. No suspect has been arrested.

Richard Hanley, 38, died after an altercation with several other people led to a shooting. According to witnesses, Hanley may have been threatening people in a tattoo shop. Police later identified Joseph Vinci as the suspect.

Eugene Gora, 85, was killed on May 10, 2018. Described as a “father figure” in his Northeast Portland neighborhood, Gora was found by his caretaker on the floor of his home. Police described the crime scene as “suspicious” and later said he died of homicidal violence. His murder remains a mystery despite his family offering a reward.

David Pierce, who identified as a woman and was known as Gigi, was shot and killed on a downtown sidewalk on May 21, 2018. Gigi was homeless and described by friends as a “wonderful lady.” The suspect, 33-year-old Sophia Adler, was arrested at the scene.

Daniel C. Brophy, 63, was shot to death at the Oregon Culinary Institute on June 2, 2018. He was a well-respected chef and instructor. His wife Nancy L. Crampton Brophy was later arrested for his murder. She is a murder-mystery writer who wrote an essay titled “How to Murder Your Husband.”

Barak Rosen, 30, was found dead on at the temporary Grant High School site on June 16, 2018. He had multiple gunshot wounds, according to police. Rosen moved to Portland from Southern California in December 2017. His family said he was looking for new opportunities and loved the outdoors, and activities like mountain biking and hiking. No suspect has been identified.

Kenneth Coleman, 30, died on June 29, 2018 outside a Northeast Portland Goodwill store. Police called his death suspicious and later determined he died of homicidal violence. Authorities haven’t identified a suspect.

Billy Mayfield, 37, was found dead in his Southeast Portland home on July 1, 2018, after reports of gunfire. In December, Daniel Harwood was accused of killing Mayfield. Harwood was already being held for gun and drug charges.

Dallas Boyd, 29, died on July 20, 2018, in North Portland. Terry Hickman was arrested and accused of strangling her to death in a van. He pleaded guilty to manslaughter in December.

Andre Pennington, 47, died on Aug. 20, 2018, after he was shot at the M. James Gleason Memorial Boat Ramp. He later died at a hospital from his injuries. Jamais L. Hart-Resberry was arrested in September for the incident.

Andrew Hathaway, 28, was found stabbed on Sept. 5, 2018, in the trunk of a burned car. It’s unclear what led up to the car fire, but police determined Hathaway died of homicidal violence. His family put up hundreds of signs around the city, but no suspect has been found.

Marcine Herinck, 89, was found murdered in the trunk of a car on Sept. 24, 2018. According to court documents, she was tortured, maimed and sexually abused. Prior to her death, Herinck had been reported missing by her family — who said she had a “heart of gold.” Timothy Mackley, 58, is suspected of killing Herinck.

Joseph Magnuson died on Sept. 26, 2018, after he was punched in the face, according to the Oregonian. Authorities said Magnuson was assaulted after he called the FedEx driver racial slurs and tried to punch him first. According to the Oregonian, the DA’s office said there’s no indication that the driver meant to kill Magnuson.

Markell Jones, 44, died from multiple gunshot wounds on Oct. 5, 2018, near the Moda Center. Two other people were shot in the incident. A Portland police officer witnessed the shooting and arrested suspect Robert J. James Jr.

Izryl Johnson, 21, died on Oct. 7, 2018, in a shooting in the Lents area. No suspect has been identified.

Armond Harper, 42, died on Oct. 19, 2018 after he was shot in North Portland. Bystanders rushed to help him and provided him with medical care before officials arrived. He was taken to the hospital and placed on life support before he died. No suspect has been arrested.

Tajheondre Price, 27,died on Oct. 23, 2018, in a shooting outside the Glass House Tavern in Northeast Portland. The father of three was shot multiple times and died at the scene. No suspect has been identified. 

Tyler Chism, 28, died on Oct. 25, 2018, after he was stabbed in the chest with a sword in Old Town. Police said the suspect, Timothy Cato, approached Chism while was arguing with his girlfriend, pulled the sword from his cane and stabbed Chism, then walked away. 

Christopher Tompkins, 59, died on Nov. 2, 2018, under suspicious circumstances. His body was found in a green space in Northeast Portland. No suspect has been identified.

Edward Taylor, 26, died on Nov. 15, 2018, in a shooting after a fight outside the Dream On Saloon strip club in Southeast Portland. No suspect has been identified. 

Dominique Eivers, 41,  died on Nov. 19, 2018, after being driven to the hospital with a gunshot wound. Nathan Moore was arrested in connection with his murder.

Carol Homer, 70, died on Nov. 20, 2018, after she was shot while sleeping under the Morrison Bridge. James Barquet, 26, was arrested in connection with her death and Brian Hansen’s. 

Brian Hansen, 51, died on Nov. 20, 2018, after he was shot in a random attack on the Burnside Bridge. James Barquet, 26, was arrested in connection with his death and Carol Homer’s. 

Ian Olson, 18, died on Dec. 21, in a room at the Motel 6 in Northeast Portland. A housekeeper found him dead with a gunshot wound. No suspects have been identified. 

Fatal police shootings in 2018

John Elifritz died on April 7, 2018, after several Portland police officers opened fire at a homeless shelter in Southeast Portland after he went on a crime spree. Witnesses said Elifirtz had a knife and was lunging at police in the shelter before they fired. A grand jury found the officers justified in the shooting.

Jason Washington, 45, was fatally shot by Portland State University police officers on June 29, 2018, while he was trying to break up a fight outside the Cheerful Tortoise bar in downtown Portland. Washington had a concealed weapon permit and was carrying a gun when he was shot 9 times.  A grand jury found Officer James Dewey and Officer Shawn McKenzie justified in the shooting.

Patrick Kimmons, 27, was fatally shot by Portland police on Sept. 20, 2018, after police said he was involved in a shooting in downtown Portland. Police said Kimmons fired 5 gunshots during a fight and then ran toward officers Jeffrey Livingston and Garry Britt, who fired at him. The officers were cleared of criminal charges. 

Samuel Rice, 30, was fatally shot by PPB Officer Kelly VanBlokland during a standoff on Oct. 11, 2018, after he held a woman hostage at the Del Rancho Hotel. Rice had been treated for mental illness in the past.
