Salem PD tight-lipped about death at apartment complex

Police responded to apartment near Claxter Court NE

SALEM, Ore. (KOIN) — Salem police spent the better part of Thursday conducting a death investigation at an apartment complex, but investigators remained tight-lipped about the circumstances surrounding it.

Around 10 a.m. police went to an apartment complext on the corner of Hyacinth Street and Portland Road, near Claxter Court Northeast. Authorities confirmed one person is dead and said there is no threat to the public.

Detectives focused on a silver Ford Taurus and took multiple pictures of it. Many people who live at the apartment complex told KOIN 6 News police “found somebody dead in the trunk.” Asked if the death is considered suspicious, police said they don’t know yet.

The Salem Police Violent Crimes Team came to the scene and taped off a stretch of the parking lot for hours.

One woman resident, who declined to be seen on camera for safety reasons, said she was taking her daughter to school and didn’t expect to see a police investigation going on in the parking lot.

“I’m wondering what the hell is going on, excuse my French,” the woman told KOIN 6 News. “But, I mean, what else can you think, especially when you see cops, detectives, all kinds of guys dressed in suits. You know they’re detectives.”

She said there’s been a lot of crime in the neighborhood since the complex was built a year ago.

“I don’t feel safe,” she said. “I keep my doors and windows locked. Let the dog out just to go pee, take care of business, clean up and we go back in.”

She also said she and many of her neighbors want to move but it’s hard to do on a fixed income.

Salem police officials said they likely won’t release any more information on this incident until next week.
