Driver crashes on I-5, tries to steal ODOT truck

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A man allegedly crashed into three cars and then tried to steal an Oregon Department of Transportation truck in Southwest Portland Wednesday morning.

Portland police said 47-year-old Jeffrey Washington was driving a white SUV when he hit the other cars going north on I-5 near Capitol Highway.

A white SUV was involved in a hit-and-run crash on Wednesday morning, June 19, 2019. (KOIN)

Washington got out of his SUV and tried to get into an ODOT vehicle. The ODOT employee took the keys out so Washington couldn’t drive away in it.

Then Washington started crossing the highway on foot. The ODOT workers tried to keep cars from hitting him, but he grabbed one of them by the throat, police said.

ODOT workers detained Washington until police arrived and took him to the hospital.

In lieu of being booked in jail, Washington was cited with unlawful entry to a motor vehicle, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, hit-and-run, harassment, open container and for having no insurance.

Police are investigating whether he was intoxicated.
