PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A man underwent several surgeries less than a day after being hit by a suspected DUII driver late Tuesday night at the interchange of I-205 and I-84 eastbound.
The driver of the car, Emmanuel Gonzalez-Coria, was arrested at the scene. The 29-year-old was booked for DUII, reckless driving and assault.
Police said the 60-year-old victim sustained life-threatening injuries.
His daughter, Danialle James, told KOIN 6 News her dad was on his way to work on I-84 eastbound when one of his tires blew out. He pulled over on the I-205 off-ramp, got out of his car and was trying to get to safety when he was hit.
James said her father had undergone several surgeries less than 24 hours later for a broken leg, pelvis, injured shoulder and damages to his stomach.
She said her dad has been awake and talking since the crash.
“He was explaining that he was in a lot of pain, that he was very scared,” James said. “It hurts because my dad is everything.”
James — a self-described “daddy’s girl” — told KOIN 6 News all she can do is wait while her dad remains in the ICU but said she’s “blessed that he is still here.”
“It is scary, it is heartbreaking,” she said. “My feelings hurt for him. It’s just one of those things where we wait to see.”
James also shared her thoughts on the driver accused of being intoxicated at the time of the crash.
“I could’ve lost my dad and [the suspect] chose to be out there like that,” she said. “There is a whole world out there with other people walking, driving, biking and things like that around you and it’s just really hard to take that in that someone chose not to take that into consideration.”
