Dominick Gonzales allegedly assaulted a transgender woman while using hate speech

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A Portland man has been charged with bias crimes after an attack on a transgender woman in the Pearl District on Sunday.

The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office said the victim and her friend were waiting in line for coffee and food in the North Park Blocks on Sept. 29.

That’s when court documents said Dominick Gonzales, 38, walked up to the woman and started yelling at her.

He allegedly used racist, homophobic, and transphobic words. The victim’s friend attempted to stand between them, and repeatedly told Gonzales to leave, but he kept trying to get around the friend to reach the victim.

Gonzales is accused of punching the victim in the face, leaving her with a bleeding, swollen lip, before bystanders wrestled Gonzales away.

He got away and fled on a bike, but officers caught up to him near Northeast Flanders and Northwest Park Avenue.

Gonzales faces 1 count of 1st-degree bias crime, 1 count 2nd-degree bias crime and 1 count of 4th-degree assault.
