PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A 57-year-old man accused of masturbating in front of an 11-year-old girl on a TriMet bus will face a judge Tuesday morning.
According to the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office, the incident happened on May 30 on bus line 17 between Killingsworth and the Lloyd Center.
David W. Besthoff is accused of public indecency, endangering the welfare of a minor, interfering with public transportation and indecent exposure. The charges were filed June 10.
The probable cause affidavit states the girl told police that she was on the bus when a man sitting near her — later identified as Besthoff — started to touch himself. According to court documents, Besthoff told the girl how pretty she was and apologized if he was making her uncomfortable, but he “couldn’t help himself.”
The 11-year-old was on her way to ice skating practice, but got off the bus instead and caught another one back home.
After she reported the incident, a Portland police officer viewed the surveillance video. Court documents state that it showed Besthoff sitting next to the girl and touching his exposed genitals. Authorities were able to identify Besthoff through the footage.
According to the documents, Besthoff was on pretrial release for several counts of felony public indecency when the May 30 incident occurred. He has been convicted of public indecency in the past — once in June 2000 and again in June 2007.
