PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A man died after he was shot in the parking lot of Tik Tok Restaurant and Bar in Southeast Portland.
Portland police responded to the 24-hour diner around 12:45 a.m. Monday on the report of gunfire.
Officers found 25-year-old Charles Exzavyer Gaines suffering from serious injuries. He was rushed to a local hospital where he later died.
People in the neighborhood woke up to those gunshots — and sirens. They said they’ve seen crime on the rise recently.
“It’s been a consistent ongoing pattern with this Tik Tok restaurant at 112th and Division,” resident Austin Sevigny said. “Pretty much once every four or five months, there’s something. There’s either violence or there’s gunshots.”
In June, Portland police arrested a man for firing multiple shots at Tik Tok. No one was injured, but neighbors say this kind of criminal activity worries them.
“Safety is utmost concern, I think and responding after the fact all the time, I’d like to see preventative maintenance put in place so citizens feel comfortable and safe within their community,” Sevigny said.
Employees at Tik Tok said all of their overnight workers are OK.
Police confirmed Gaines wasn’t inside the restaurant before or during the shooting and they don’t believe the crime is connected to Tik Tok.
It’s still unclear what led up to the shooting.
Authorities also haven’t released any suspect information, but said there’s no danger to the public.
